Bartestree
- 3
Ledbury Swifts United - 4 (Pritchard
4)
High tension
games are now coming thick and fast for Swifts; last week
they secured a narrow 4-3 victory against Bartestree in the
dying seconds of the game only to be rewarded this week
with the visit of the in form and table-topping team from
Credenhill. Once again this match was played in ideal
weather conditions at United’s Ross Road home ground and
with good support from both sets of parents. United set the
early pace as their extremely hard working central midfield
partnership of Daniel Sewell, Mathew Pickering and William
Notley set out their stall to limit Credenhill’s passing
game. This tactic appeared to work well and was rewarded by
two early runs and shots from Sewell and a thundering
header from Ben Butler who was denied a goal for the second
week running by the cross bar. Inevitably Credenhill did
launch counter attacks of their own, but could find no way
past the outstanding William Notley who provided excellent
cover for his central defenders from the first minute to
the last. Even when Credenhill switched play to the flanks,
they found Charlie McCarthy at left back and James
Charlesworth at right back in fine form. Eventually the
deadlock was broken after 20 minutes when Thomas Coleman
broke free on the left wing and played the ball into the
path of Daniel O’Neill who had overlapped him from his
central midfield position. Daniel surged forward to the
goal line and crossed the ball low and firm into the
Credenhill penalty box where Jack Pritchard was well placed
to volley the ball home from short range. Inevitably the
first half was a closely contested affair. However, United
were able to draw on their strength in depth as Joe
Llewellin, Joseph Morris and Tom Brain all made vital
contributions in midfield. The second half also started
positively for United with Sewell assuming the striking
role and going extremely close to extending United’s score
on two occasions. The second half was then interrupted from
almost 30 minutes due to a serious knee injury to Thomas
Coleman. Unfortunately an ambulance was needed to take
Thomas to hospital. With the tie in the balance it was
critical that United were fully focused at the re-start of
play as their concentration was immediately tested by a
number of attacking moves from Credenhill. As against
Bartestree in the previous week, Ben Butler and Kasihta
Machae playing in central defence for United, were in a
mean mood and their reading of the game and resolute
determination to keep a clean sheet was obvious to everyone
watching. The main Credenhill striker did break free on one
occasion. However, Jonathan Gooch made himself as large as
possible in the United goal, in text book fashion, and
prevented a direct strike on goal. Finally to the great
relief of Swifts supporters and management, the referee
blew the whistle for the end of the game enabling United to
secure a vital 1-0 victory. Swifts would like to thank
Credenhill for a great game and for their support for
Thomas Coleman who we all hope makes a speedy recovery.
Sun
Sep 30 - League Match 4
Bartestree
- 3
Ledbury Swifts United - 4 (Pritchard
4)
The match
was played in excellent conditions with the Swifts having
the initial advantage of playing down the slope. This
advantage appeared to pay dividends in minutes as Daniel
Sewell released Jack Pritchard with two fine through balls.
Jack’s first shot just missed the right hand up-right, but
he made amends moments later when scored with a deft touch
which sent the Bartestree goal keeper the wrong way. Swifts
almost scored a second minutes later when Daniel O’Neill
capped a fine run with a firm shot which was just saved by
the Bartestree keeper. As expected, Bartestree overcame
their initial shock at conceding an early goal and started
to play some excellent passing football in midfield. Their
strong running right winger and inventive striker also
caused the Swifts extensive problems. However, Swifts
defence of Charlie McCarthy, Kasihta Machae, Ben Butler and
James Charlesworth all held firm and each made vital
clearances. Eventually, however, Bartestree’s excellent
period of play resulted in an equalising goal which they
then quickly extended to a 3-1 lead with some well taken
goals from their ever threatening right winger. With the
game apparently slipping away, the Swifts midfield of Joe
Llewellin, Sewell, O’Neill, Thomas Coleman and William
Notley dug deep into their reserves to launch an epic fight
back. William was particularly successful in breaking up
the Bartestree attacks and Joe and Thomas gave the
important width to the Swifts play which created more space
for Sewell and O’Neill to launch central midfield counter
attacks. One such counter attack led by O’Neill resulted in
a fine lob from Llewellin which almost crept in just under
the bar. Fortunately, however, as the Bartestree keeper
parried the ball away, Jack Pritchard was on hand at the
left post to volley it into the net. This was immediately
followed by another fine through ball from Sewell into the
path of Pritchard. Jack controlled the ball and scored an
equalising goal and his second hat trick of the season with
a firm low shot to set up an epic second half. The second
half was an unbelievable experience as Bartestree camped in
the Swifts half for the first 20 minutes. However, an
incredible defensive display by the whole of the Swifts
team including two solid second half performances from Toby
Lee and Tom Brain and two amazing saves from Jonathan Gooch
in the Swifts goal kept Bartestree at bay. It was
particularly rewarding to see the whole team operate as
such an effective unit. As the game drew to a close and a
3-3 draw seemed inevitable, tired legs and injuries started
to materialise. However, a number of carefully judged
substitutions kept the Swifts going and in the dying
seconds of the game Thomas Coleman broke free from midfield
and played the pass of the match into the path of the
advancing Jack Pritchard and Daniel Sewell who both used
their growing experience to stay on side. With every
parent’s nerves on edge, Jack Pritchard got to the ball
first and advanced quickly on the Bartestree goal before
rifling a right foot shot past the stranded Bartestree
goalkeeper. The pent up anxiety of the whole team and their
parents was released in micro second as a loud cheer rose
up. This was quickly followed by second cheer moments later
as the referee blew the whistle for the end of the game and
the Swifts recorded an excellent 4-3 victory.
Sun Sep 23 - League Match 3
Ledbury
Swifts United - 9 (Sewell 3 (1
pen), Pickering 2, O'Neill, Pritchard, Coleman,
McCarthy)
Ledbury Swifts Rovers - 0
United
started very well and enjoyed a lot of early possession,
but found the Rovers defence to be very resilient.
Eventually the deadlock was broken when Jack Pritchard
passed diagonally forward to Charlie McCarthy on the right
wing. Charlie moved forward and crossed the ball into the
penalty area where Daniel O’Neill was waiting to sweep the
ball home for a good team goal. A second goal quickly
followed when a well taken corner was neatly headed home by
Daniel Sewell. More goals quickly followed with Daniel
Sewell bagging a second and Mathew Pickering and Jack
Pritchard also getting on the score sheet. As the match
approached the end of the first half, the Rovers initiated
a number of counter attacks, but on the majority of
occasions found the United defence of James Charlesworth,
Joseph Morris, Kasihta Machae and Joe Llewellin alert to
the danger. On the occasions when the Rovers did bear down
on the United goal, Jonathan Gooch demonstrated his
sharpness of mind in making a number of timely
interceptions. The second half, like the first, was played
with great spirit and great professionalism on both sides.
The United midfield continued to set the foundation as they
had in the first half with William Notley and Tom Brain
being particularly dominant in the holding midfield role.
The Rovers also played in a very determined manner and were
unlucky to have a penalty awarded against them. Sewell
converted from the penalty spot to secure his hat trick.
Further close range goals were scored by Mathew Pickering
and Thomas Coleman and Toby Lee had a shot just turned
wide. McCarthy then added the icing on the cake with a
superbly taken free kick which looped over the Rovers goal
keeper.
Sun
Sep 16 - League Match 2
Ledbury
Swifts United - 2 (Pritchard
2)
Westfields - 0
Swifts
and Westfields both lost on the opening day of the season
so both were eager to get their seasons back on track. The
match also had some further interest with two former
Ledbury players in the Westfields team. The match was
played in ideal weather conditions and on an excellent
pitch and began with some enterprising play from both
sides. Swifts, in particular, began very competitively and
with a high level of team discipline which resulted in a
number of early chances. Jack Pritchard and Daniel Sewell
both had early shots and Ben Butler went extremely close to
opening the scoring with a fine header. Although the
opening goal did not come immediately, the Swifts kept to
their game of competing strongly in central midfield,
playing early balls forward and using the width of the
pitch wherever possible. Charlie McCarthy, Thomas Coleman,
Tom Brain and Toby Lee all made telling contributions on
the wings. Sewell, Daniel O’Neill, Mathew Pickering and
William Notley also took learnings from recent training
sessions and made passing a key component of their game.
Indeed a fine passing move down the right wing and an
excellent unselfish pass from Sewell into the feet of
Pritchard enabled Jack to open the scoring on the 20 minute
mark with a simple side foot into the goal. Inevitably
Westfields responded with a strong passage of play
themselves and in particular their striker and right winger
were very threatening for the balance of the first half.
However, the Swifts defence strengthened by the return of
Butler and protected by Notley in the holding midfield role
never looked under serious threat. As the second half got
underway the Swifts knew that it would be critically
important to score a second goal to effectively kill the
tie. That goal duly came when the Swifts midfield won the
ball and played another early ball forward to the right of
the penalty area. Pritchard just managed to get to the ball
first and under pressure from the Westfield defender lobbed
the keeper to score an excellent second goal. Westfields
changed their formation immediately to go 3-4-3 which
required a change in the Swifts formation. Rewardingly
Swifts demonstrated good flexibility and continuing
discipline and coped with this change in a very
professional manner. Kasihta Machae, in particular, had an
excellent second half at left back and along with Butler
was supported in defence by very positive performances from
Joseph Morris and James Charlesworth. Although Jonathan
Gooch had a relatively quiet game in goal, his captaincy
and excellent handling were crucial in securing this vital
win.
