Swifts gave a much-improved performance after two heavy defeats and were unlucky not to come away from Hinton with any reward for their efforts. Swifts started brightly and matched the home side for effort from the kick off, the defence looked solid with Chris Davis, Harry Weaver and Chris James keeping a close eye on their opponents and Lewis Hodges sweeping up any danger that did appear. Going forward Craig Preece was showing up well and Matt Lynnes was pressing the home defence supported well by the midfield of Jamie Onions, Ally Williams, Josh Brookland and Kieran O’Toole. Midway through the half Tom McCormack made a stunning double save to keep out a certain goal for the home side while at the other end Josh Brookland shot over and Preece and Jaime Onions both went close for Swifts. The deadlock was broken just before half time when the lively Hinton forward tricked his way into the box and finished from close range. Swifts to their credit came out in the second half determined to make a fight of it and with Hodges still keeping the defence well organised the game remained a tight affair. Swifts best chance fell to Lynnes after good work by Preece on the right but his close range effort somehow looped up over the bar as he stretched to reach the ball. Swifts introduced the fresh legs of Matt Johnson, Mark Davies and Andy McCormack as the game went on but as the game became more stretched it was Hinton who scored again twice in quick succession late on with a shot low into the corner and another effort that went under the diving Tom McCormack. At the other end a Brookland shot just wide before an own goal by a home defender under pressure form Lynnes gave Swifts something to cheer for their efforts.

Sun Oct 23: League Match 4
Ledbury Swifts - 2 (Preece, Hodges)
Bromyard Town - 6
Swifts found themselves down to the bare bones due to four of the squad being absent for various reasons and they were soon on the back foot against local rivals Bromyard. Tom McCormack was soon busy in Swifts goal as the defence of James Branch, Lewis Hodges, Harry Weaver and Chris James had to work hard to deal with attack after attack from Bromyard. Tom made a great double save to keep the score blank but was finally beaten with a long-range effort that clipped the bar and went in to give Bromyard the lead. It was soon 2-0 when Swifts failed to clear a corner kick and a neat finish by a Bromyard forward put Swifts in deep trouble. Swifts then put together a move which saw Hodges feed Craig Preece who set Ricky Day away down the left before meeting his cross only to see his effort cleared off the line. But soon after Bromyard increased their lead when a free kick was floated into the Swifts box and a looping header found the net. For Swifts Preece headed just wide from a corner but got some reward just before half time when a through ball from Day still left Craig with a lot to do but he battled his way into the box and gave Swifts some hope with a neat finish. At the start of the second half Swifts pushed Hodges forward and reshuffled at the back with Branch joining Weaver in the centre of defence with Mark Davis dropping in at right back. But Bromyard soon increased their lead following a good attack down the right and from a free kick that was powerfully driven home, putting Bromyard well in control at 5-1. Bromyard may have eased off slightly but Swifts started to win more of the ball in midfield with Ally Williams and Josh Brookland. They hit back with a good goal when Brookland sent Day away down the left and his low cross was hammered home by Hodges at the far post. Day was looking far livelier down the left and he had a fierce shot well saved before Hodges had another effort turned around the post by the Bromyard keeper. At the other end Weaver was still working hard to deal with the quick Bromyard breaks and McCormack made a couple more good saves. Preece who worked hard for Swifts up front almost battled through for his second but his effort was block and Hodges headed the rebound against the bar. Just before the end Bromyard broke clear following a Swifts corner and made the final score 6-2.

Sun Oct 16: League Match 3
Belmont - 2
Ledbury Swifts - 3
(Hodges, Day, Brookland)
Following the cup match that went to extra time a couple of weeks earlier another close game was expected. Swifts welcomed Alistair Williams into the midfield for the first time this season and this allowed Lewis Hodges to move into a forward role. Swifts started well and started to pass the ball around from the early stages with Chris James and Ricky Day were linking well down the left. The Belmont keeper made a good double save at his near post when Josh Brookland and Chris James both had powerful efforts on goal. Day then threatened to break clear but it came to nothing while at the other end Tom McCormack made a fine diving save to keep out a good effort from the lively Belmont attack. He then made a good blocking save after Belmont’s man of the match made a great attacking run from his own half of the pitch. Swifts snatched the opening goal with a great passing move started by Chris Davies who won the ball at the back; he fed Jamie Onions in midfield and he quickly fed the ball through to Hodges who race on to finish confidently past the home keeper. Swifts now had the upper hand and looking more confident took a two-goal lead when Day’s left wing corner kick deceived the home keeper and went in. However just before half time a misunderstanding in the Swifts defence allowed a Belmont attacker to nip in and score to make it 2-1 at half time. Swifts brought on Andy McCormack at half time but started the second half on the back foot as Belmont pressed and Swifts found it difficult to get the passing moves going. Harry Weaver was working hard at the back and James Branch was keeping a close eye on the dangerous left-winger for Belmont, but Swifts gradually came back at Belmont. Matt Lynnes started to make some telling runs up front and Ally Williams almost got in on goal but the ball raced away from him to the home keeper. Onions then almost increased the lead when his cross shot came back off the post and Day following up only found the side netting. Just after though Rick’s corner kick was meet by a fierce volley from Josh Brookland that flew into the top corner. Lynnes then had another run and shot that was well saved by the home keeper. Swifts welcomed back Mark Davies to the side as the half went on with them well in control and looking to add to the score. Belmont snatched a consolation just before the end when possession was lost from a Swifts throw in and Belmont raced clear and the powerful finish by the home striker gave Tom McCormack no chance. But it was too late to save the game and Swifts ran out winners by 3-2 to take their first points of the season

Sun Oct 02: Bill Bowkett Cup - Round 1
Belmont - 1
Ledbury Swifts - 2
(Lynnes, Day)
After extra time
Swifts travelled to Hereford on Sunday for this first round cup-tie and finally came out on top of a very close encounter that needed extra time to find a winner. Both teams have made a struggling start to their league programme and early indications showed it could be a close game as both teams struggled to get any control of the match. Swifts had an early shot from Lewis Hodges that was comfortable saved by the home keeper but at the other end Harry Weaver and Chris Davies were having to work hard to deal with the Belmont attacks. Ricky Day and Chris James were combining well down the left and Ricky had a good shot that went just over after a good through ball from Lewis Hodges. Another cross from Day gave Kieran O’Toole a chance but he shot just wide of the target. Belmont then had a free kick well saved by Swifts keeper Tom McCormack before Hodges played Matt Lynnes through for a run at goal but the home keeper saved his effort with his legs and at half time it was goalless. Belmont took an early lead in the second half when McCormack made a good save but the ball bounced around in the box before a home striker blasted home. Swifts responded well and took the game to Belmont and for the first time looked to put some sustained pressure on the home defence. Joshua Brookland was finding some form in midfield and Day was still making some good breaks down the left flank. From a cross to the right Jaime Onions shot just over and then Day had a good shot well saved. Swifts deservedly drew level when the hard-working Lynnes robbed a home defender before racing clear and calmly finding the corner of the net. Then with time running out Matt saw a clever lob drift wide after Hodges flicked the ball into the box but at full time it remained 1-1. Extra time saw both teams going for the win and at the back Weaver was winning plenty of high balls to keep the home attack at bay. With chances hard to come by as both teams started to tire it was looking like it would go to penalties but with only a couple of minutes remaining a goal kick taken by Hodges saw Lynnes make a strong break down the right and he did well before firing across the face of goal for Day to tap home at the far post and give Swifts a hard fought victory.
