Sun Feb 12 - League Match 14
Ledbury Swifts - 12 (Ford 7, Morgan, Aston-Monger,
Walker, Dudley, Hall)
Weston-under-Penyard
- 0
Within four minutes of the start, Swifts' Richard Watkins
came close to opening the scoring with a well-struck
long-range shot which only just went over and Ben Adams
started what was to be a match-long series of runs down the
right which the visitors just could not handle. Swifts were
in rampant form and despite Weston's well-drilled offside
trap, which denied Swifts' many chances throughout the
match, Ollie Ford got his first of the day on eight minutes
with a high shot which the keeper only just managed to
touch before it hit the net. In the 16th minute Sandy
Morgan rounded the keeper, after pouncing on a through
ball, and calmly stroked home for Swifts' second. Four
minutes later, Ben Dudley cleverly turned an opponent and
put Ford clear to send a low shot into Weston's net for his
second. Within a minute Ollie made space for himself and
another well-struck shot put Swifts four up. Ford added to
his tally in the 30th minute and again a minute later. Just
before the break, Adams beat several players on the right
but was unlucky to see his shot smothered by Weston's
beleaguered keeper. Ten minutes into the second half, Ford
left the keeper stranded with a low shot into the bottom
corner to put Swifts seven ahead. Harry Aston-Monger made
it eight with a high shot from inside the area with 15
minutes left. Seconds later Dudley and Ford went through
together and Ollie scored Swifts' ninth of the day and took
his personal tally to seven. Morgan, who is by far more
accustomed to scoring goals than stopping them, swapped
roles with keeper Jason Walker, who promptly took the ball
through against two defenders before making sure of Swifts'
tenth of the day. Ledbury's stalwart defenders Tom Green,
Neely Florence, Aaron Hall and Ally Mitchell had not been
under much pressure and, after some tactical changes, Ally
took on a couple of Weston defenders but was pressurised
just enough for his shot to hit the post. Dudley got
Swifts' eleventh when the ball fell kindly in the area and
he rounded a defender to knock it into the net. Just before
the final whistle, Hall made it a round dozen with a
well-timed run onto a through pass and a fine shot which
left the visiting keeper helpless.
Sun
Feb 12 - League Match 14
Hereford Lads Club Colts - 0
Ledbury Swifts - 6 (Matthews 2, Morgan 4)
Swifts travelled to Hereford with yet another severely
depleted team. Several regulars were missing and Ledbury
were obliged to field a 10-man team. Ben Park played in
defence again, joined by the returning Neely Florence who
was still carrying an injury, and Harry Aston-Monger was
playing up front. Despite the numerical disadvantage,
Swifts stayed on top for the first half with Andy Matthews
coming close after 15 minutes. Noticing the home keeper was
off his line, Andy hit a high shot which forced him to
scramble backwards to tip the ball clear. Andy later put
Sandy Morgan through for the best chance of the game until
that point, but the shot was no challenge for the keeper.
On one of the few occasions that Colts ventured more than a
few feet into the Swifts’ half, defender Tom Green
read their move and intercepted a dangerous pass before
clearing. In the last minutes of the first half,
Swifts’ Richard Watkins in goal was troubled for the
first time when Colts managed a foray out of their own half
but the score remained level. In an effort to add to the
opening goal scored by Matthews seconds earlier, Ally
Mitchell beat several defenders before his shot hit the
post and minutes later, Ben Dudley’s headed pass to
Morgan resulted in Swifts’ second. In the second
half, Sandy almost added to his tally when he dribbled
effortlessly through the defence only to see his fine shot
hit the bar but his second came shortly afterwards from a
long shot following a good run down the left. The fourth
came after some great play which left the home defence
bemused and Matthews got his second of the day. Swifts
almost got their fifth after Ben Adams made yet another
fine run up the right wing but his cross resulted in a shot
which the keeper managed to stop. As his confidence grows,
Ben’s speed is becoming increasingly valuable to the
Swifts’ attack. Morgan was slightly fortunate to make
it five when the keeper misjudged the bounce from his shot
and the ball went into the net. Defenders Green and
Mitchell both got into scoring positions again but their
shots were off target. Swifts sixth came when Mitchell left
Morgan in space which he exploited well before sending a
measured chip over the advancing keeper’s head.
Sun Jan 29 - League Match 13
FC Phoenix Milan - 2
Ledbury Swifts -
0
From
the start it was obvious that both teams were very much
committed to victory and for a while Swifts had the
advantage in terms of possession although they seemed
unable to achieve penetration in front of goal. The
ever-improving Ben Adams made several impressive runs down
the right throughout the game and Ashley Wadley did the
same on the left but their efforts were unrewarded in terms
of scoring. Although Swifts were enjoying more possession
than their opponents, Phoenix soon started to look more
dangerous and Ledbury’s Jason Walker was called on to
save the team’s blushes several times in the first
half. Forced to play out of position for the second week in
succession, Richard Watkins had a good game alongside
regular defenders Tom Green, Aaron Hall and Ally Mitchell.
With attacker Alex Morgan and midfielders Andy Matthews and
Ollie Ford struggling more and more due to injury, the team
was beginning to look like they were playing without a
plan. Milan came close with a header and a low drive from
the edge of the area and although Harry Gregory was unlucky
with a deflected shot, Swifts looked grateful to go into
the break at 0-0. Three minutes into the second half, the
inevitable happened when Phoenix went one up. From then on,
Swifts never looked like they would get back into the game.
With 17 minutes left Alex Morgan limped off to be replaced
by Harry Aston Monger. Alex later came back on to replace
Ollie Ford. Five minutes before the end the home side
penetrated the Swifts’ defence and put the game
beyond all doubt with a well-taken and well-deserved goal.
This was a lacklustre Ledbury performance although,
admittedly some regular players were absent due to illness
and Swifts’ already depleted line up was further
weakened because several players on the field were carrying
injuries.
Sun
Jan 22 - League Match 12
Ledbury Swifts - 7 (Ford, Morgan 4, Park,
Mitchell)
Golden Valley - 0
Swifts
started their first league match of the year with some fine
passing football. For the first ten minutes, Golden Valley
did not manage to venture over the halfway line and Ledbury
looked set to cruise to an easy victory. Ben Adams came
close in the first few minutes after a neat pass from Sandy
Morgan, but the goals would not come for Swifts who
repeatedly fell foul of the visitors’ offside trap.
Ben Dudley and Morgan were unlucky on a couple of occasions
and, despite Swifts’ superior play, it began to look
like one of those days where the goals just will not come.
Golden Valley started to have more possession but were
unable to find a way around Aaron Hall, Tom Green, Richard
Hall and Ally Mitchell in defence. Jason Walker was rarely
troubled in goal. After a scoreless first half, Swifts
shifted into high gear when play resumed and a second
minute goal by Ollie Ford was closely followed by one from
Morgan who used his speed to go through and beat the
offside trap. Swifts kept up the pressure and Sandy got his
second after collecting the ball on the left and putting it
beyond the keeper. His third came shortly afterwards when
he beat several players before netting his shot. A high
shot from Ally Mitchell almost beat the keeper but Ben Park
materialised to put the rebound into the back of the net.
With ten minutes to go, Golden Valley’s keeper made a
mistake and Morgan collected the ball and, walking round
him, slotted it into the back of the net for his fourth and
Swifts’ sixth of the day. Five minutes from the end,
Swifts’ Ally Mitchell gave the visiting keeper no
chance when he rocketed a high shot into the net from some
thirty yards, thereby removing his name from the short list
of team members who have not yet scored for their club.
Swifts played for each other today and each and every team
member deserves full credit for an excellent
performance.
Sun
Dec 11 - League Match 11
Ledbury Swifts - 8 (Dudley 2, Ford (pen), Morgan
3, Nye, Gregory)
Bromyard Town - 0
Following last week’s
hard-earned away victory at Belmont, Swifts were at home
this weekend to Bromyard with a full squad to pick from.
Within five minutes, some good work in defence allowed Tom
Green to put a pass to Ben Dudley’s feet. Showing
determination and perseverance, Ben beat off a stiff
challenge before slotting the ball past the keeper. Neely
Florence was causing Bromyard problems down the right wing
with runs from midfield and it was not long before
Swifts’ pressure won them a penalty when Dudley left
the visiting defence no option but to push him. Ollie Ford
stepped up and his low, hard-hit penalty kick put Swifts
two ahead after 13 minutes. Just a few minutes later,
Dudley made it 3-0 when he scored his second of the day
from a Ford pass. Just before the break, Ally
Mitchell’s pass from deep in defence found Alex
Morgan who slotted it home for Swifts’ fourth. During
the break Richard Watkins replaced Florence and it was not
long before Morgan latched onto another Mitchell pass and
made it 5-0. Ben Adams was using his speed down the right
wing and, after a flicked pass from the Swifts’
defence, his run ended when he lashed the ball at the
Bromyard keeper who could only palm it past the post for a
corner. Swifts’ sixth came after Dean Lee made a
zigzagging run down the left, sending a cross through which
Morgan converted with a fine header. Trying for his first
ever Swifts goal, Mitchell collected a rebound and battled
his way through the Bromyard defence before his shot was
easily saved by the keeper. Even when six goals down,
Bromyard kept their chins up and Aaron Hall, Ben Park, and
Green were called upon several times to thwart their
attacks with their customary efficiency. David Nye’s
first Swifts’ goal put the home team seven-up after a
good run down the right followed by an excellently-taken
shot past the oncoming keeper. Ledbury’s tally ended
when Harry Gregory met Mitchell’s through pass and
left the keeper no chance. The score could have been
substantially higher – Ford hit the woodwork three
times for example - but today’s result was due more
than anything to the fact that Swifts played good, passing
football and each and every player involved should be
congratulated for the unselfish way they played for one
another.

Nov 27 - League Match 9
Ledbury Swifts - 2 (Aston-Monger,

Bartestree - 1
For
the third weekend in succession, Swifts were facing
opponents who are currently gracing the top places in the
league. What would normally be a difficult match was made
all the more daunting by the absence of four important
regular players. Swifts started on the attack and earned
two corners in the first three minutes but it was not long
before their defence, composed today of new members Richard
Watkins and Ben Park along with old hands Neely Florence
and Ally Mitchell were put under pressure with Ally making
several outstanding tackles at critical moments. Jason
Walker made a few of the excellent saves we have come to
expect of him while the home defence worked out how to deal
with the Bartestree attack, whose height and pace were
posing problems. It was the 19th minute before Swifts
managed to break the deadlock when Harry Aston-Monger
latched onto the ball on the edge of the area and, noticing
that Bartestree’s keeper was badly positioned, left
him watching helplessly as his well-placed lob sailed
towards the goal where a desperate defender could only try
to head it clear from behind the line. Bartestree piled on
the pressure and, were it not for Mitchell’s display
of determined tackling and confident interception of high
balls, their equaliser may have come much earlier than the
last minute before the whistle, when they finally managed
to penetrate the defence and score from close in. During
the break, goal-scorer Aston-Monger was replaced by Dave
Nye in attack. Swifts started the second half with the
obvious intention of re-taking control and within five
minutes, Ben Dudley had put them back ahead with a high
dropping 35 yard shot. Ben was desperately unlucky a few
minutes later with an attempt to lob the keeper which went
narrowly past the post. The match was becoming increasingly
tense, but some good play from Swifts’ makeshift
midfield of Alex Morgan, Aaron Hall, Harry Gregory and Andy
Matthews kept some of the pressure off the defence while
continuing to feed Dudley and Nye in attack. Normally an
attacker, there were periods today when Morgan was a
revelation in midfield, making life extremely unpleasant
for his opponents, who just could not work out how to deal
with his pace either on or off the ball. This could be a
key option for Swifts’ league challenge this season.
Unluckily for Bartestree, the post denied them an equaliser
minutes before the final whistle which Ledbury greeted with
a mixture of relief and pride at yet another hard-fought
victory under difficult circumstances.
Sun
Nov 20 - League Match 8
Hereford Lads Club - 0
Ledbury Swifts - 1 (Morgan)
Captained
today by their keeper, Jason Walker, Swifts took to the
field for their second away encounter with Lads’ Club
in as many weeks, determined to make up for their
undeserved Cup defeat. During the first half, Swifts were
at a disadvantage as they were constantly dazzled by the
setting sun and Lads’ Club did their best to exploit
this advantage by subjecting the Swifts’ defence of
Neely Florence, Tom Green, Ben Park and Ally Mitchell to
attack after attack. To a man, the defence kept their
discipline and it was only after twenty minutes that the
home side managed to get their first shot on goal which
resulted in an easy save for Walker. Swifts’ midfield
struggled to get into the game but gradually began to play
for each other and provided Ben Dudley with a pass which
allowed him just enough space to shoot although the home
keeper made an easy save. Alex Morgan was desperately
unlucky to miss when he pounced on a through pass but was
just a yard short of putting his team ahead. Were it not
for the niggling injury he has been carrying for some time
now, the ball would surely have hit the back of the net.
Swifts went into the break with the honours even and were
beginning to look like they were gaining the upper hand.
The game re-started with Aaron Hall taking over from
Richard Watkins in midfield and, before long, Andy Matthews
had to be replaced by Harry Gregory due to injuries
sustained in a series of tackles. The two new-comers, along
with Ashley Wadley and the never-tiring Ollie Ford were
working hard in midfield to keep the pressure up in a
hard-fought battle for victory which could have gone to the
home side were it not for a series of simply fantastic
saves pulled off by the very impressive Walker.
Swifts’ belief in themselves was rewarded in full
when Morgan ran down the right and sent a long, low shot
into the back of the net to snatch a sweet victory in the
last minutes of this exciting match of end-to-end football.
All in all, each and every one of the team deserves praise
for an excellent display of commitment and tenacity which,
if built upon, will see them in good stead for the
remainder of the season.
Sun
Nov 13 - BOSS Cup - Round 2
Hereford Lads Club - 2
Ledbury Swifts - 0
Captained this week by Ally
Mitchell, Swifts dominated the game for most of the first
half and seemed to have rediscovered the fighting spirit
which has eluded them on a number of occasions so far this
season. Midfielders Andy Matthews, Ben Park and Harry
Gregory fought hard for every ball, keeping the pressure up
on the opposition and in attack Ben Dudley and Alex Morgan
were keen to add to their tally from last week’s 8-2
victory in which Ben netted five and Alex three. Ollie Ford
showed a real hunger for success and within 3 minutes had
lashed a 25 yard shot just past the right-hand post. It was
a further five minutes before the home team managed to get
any distance out of their own half and then forced Jason
Walker to pull off a fine save. Gradually, Lads’ Club
got back into the game and Tom Green, Neely Florence, Aaron
Hall and Mitchell all made timely interventions to clear up
any danger. In the 25th minute, Ford was desperately
unlucky to see his shot from just inside the Hereford half
of the field hit the post after leaving the keeper stranded
and Morgan was also most unfortunate when his speed put him
through one on one against the keeper who had to dive at
his feet to avoid conceding. Against the run of play,
Lads’ Club managed to penetrate the Swifts defence
and went one up just before the interval when Richard
Watkins replaced Dudley. Just after play resumed, Walker
beat an attacker to the ball thanks to a determined charge
and clearance only to be called upon to carry out a fine
diving save a few seconds later. Seconds later Gregory came
close at the other end of the field but by this time it was
starting to look like one of those days where, no matter
how hard you try, goals just will not come. On several
occasions, Swifts looked certain to equalise but were
unable to get a foot to the ball. With 15 minutes to go,
Watkins and Gregory were replaced by Ashley Wadley and Ben
Adams. Ben promptly put Morgan through but his shot went
narrowly past the post. Harry Aston-Monger also played his
part towards the end, but it was not Swifts’ day. A
few minutes before the end, Lads’ Club went two up
through a penalty to seal Swifts’ exit from the
B.O.S.S. Under 13s Cup.

Wellington - 2
Ledbury Swifts - 3 (Ford, Morgan

With
keeper Jason Walker out due to injury, Swifts were forced
to reorganise with midfielder Richard Watkins volunteering
to take his place. In the first minutes Andy Matthews fired
into the Wellington keeper’s arms following a run
down the right by Ben Adams and then Ben Dudley neatly beat
the home keeper who was rushing out to intercept. With
little time to spare, Ben was desperately unlucky when his
shot from the narrowest of angles ran across the goalmouth
only inches from the line. Somewhat against the run of
play, Swifts went one behind in the 14th minute after a
Wellington free kick beat stand-in keeper Watkins. Ollie
Ford levelled the score four minutes later with what seems
to be becoming a trademark long range shot which went in
off the keeper’s hands. Within a couple of minutes
Ollie almost put Swifts ahead with a virtually identical
shot which only just missed its mark. Wellington’s
reply was not long in coming via an attack down the wing
followed by a pass across the goal which was an easy tap-in
for their forward. At 2-1 down Ledbury looked ineffective
in attack and defenders Tom Green, Neely Florence, Aaron
Hall and Ally Mitchell were kept busier than they would
like trying to keep the match within reach. In midfield
Ford was, as always a constant irritation to the opposition
and was ably assisted by Ashley Wadley who had an
outstanding game. Matthews and Adams both tested Wellington
on the flanks but were held at bay. Just before half time,
Alex Morgan, who had been tightly marked for 30 minutes
almost levelled the score. In the second half, Swifts
reorganised their attack with Morgan dropping back. 15
minutes from the end, this tactical change paid off when
Alex pounced on Matthew’s pass to make the score 2-2.
Harry Aston-Monger then made his first appearance since his
recent injury when he replaced Adams. A few minutes later
Andy sent a cross in from the wing and Alex scored his
second of the day with a fine header to put Swifts 3-2
ahead. Wellington then rallied and the last few minutes
were tense as Ledbury held on for victory.
Sun
Oct 16 - League Match 5
Ledbury Swifts - 2 (Gregory,
Morgan)
Ross Town - 3
With
Dean Lee and Tom Messam making welcome returns to the team,
Swifts made a positive start, taking the lead after nine
minutes when Alex Morgan’ shot rebounded off the
keeper before falling to Harry Gregory who netted the
rebound. Minutes before, Aaron Hall had cleared a dangerous
ball after Swifts’ keeper Jason Walker had bravely
dived at the feet of an approaching attacker for what would
not be the first time in this match. Two minutes after the
first goal, Alex and Harry’s attacking partnership
paid off again when the ball came through to Alex who kept
his cool and fired a well-placed shot over the advancing
keeper to put Swifts two up. Swifts played some good
passing football with reliable defending from Aaron Hall,
Ally Mitchell, Tom Green and Neely Florence. As usual,
Aaron kept things under control at the back while Ally made
sure that not much got past him in the air. In midfield,
Ben Dudley, Ashley Wadley, Andy Matthews and Ollie Ford
played well with Ben Adams, Dean Lee, Richard Watkins and
Tom Messam all playing their part at various stages of the
game. Towards the end of the first half, Swifts hold on the
match began to slip and Ross were robbed of a goal by a
fine dive at the attacker’s feet by Walker who was
finally beaten a few minutes later by a fine low shot from
the edge of the area. Following the re-start, Morgan was
through on the visiting keeper when he fell to a tackle and
was replaced by Gregory who had been rested. Swifts were
losing their grip on the match and Ross pressed on to score
an equaliser with 12 minutes left. The equaliser seemed to
affect Swifts’ morale and they quickly conceded
another goal. With the visitors a goal up, Swifts struggled
to come back into the match but were unable to do so before
the final whistle.
Sun
Oct 09 - League Match 4
Pegasus Juniors - 1
Ledbury Swifts - 4 (Ford 2, Morgan
2)
Taking
possession just inside the halfway line in the third
minute, Ollie Ford broke forward and let loose a long-range
shot which found the net after the home keeper had managed
to get the faintest of touches. Today’s captain, Tom
Green, along with co-defenders Neely Florence, Aaron Hall
and Ally Mitchell were kept busy throughout the remainder
of the first half with Aaron sweeping up at the back and
Ally cutting out any high balls before any damage could be
done. The score remained 0-1 until three minutes before the
whistle when Ford beat several opponents before another
long-range shot left the home keeper stranded. Ten minutes
after the break, Pegasus broke down the right finding a
rare gap in the Swifts’ defence, and slotted the ball
past keeper Jason Walker from an acute angle. Ashley
Wadley, Ben Dudley and Andy Matthews were working hard in
midfield but still could not penetrate the Pegasus line.
With 15 minutes to go Wadley and Dudley were replaced by
Richard Watkins and Ben Adams. Matthews sent in a perfect
cross to Watkins who, pressed for time by a
defender’s challenge, let loose a powerful shot which
just went over the bar. Florence tried a trademark shot
from halfway but luck was not on his side. Swifts really
started to fire on all cylinders with some fine interplay
with Watkins and Harry Gregory. Harry later combined with
Alex Morgan but the shot was saved. Ledbury’s passing
game had been building up for a while when Ford’s
pass fell to Morgan who fired into the bottom right corner
to put the game out of Pegasus’ reach. Gregory and
Morgan continued to torment the home defence and two
minutes before the end Alex pounced on Harry’s
penetrating pass to score the fourth with a fine low shot.
Sun Oct 02 - League Match 3
Ledbury Swifts - 1 (Morgan)
Cusop Dynamo - 2
Within
a few minutes it was obvious that Swifts were facing the
most challenging opposition they have come up against so
far this season. Ollie Ford came close with a long range
shot early on and Aaron Hall intelligently read the play
and intercepted a penetrating Cusop pass before any damage
could be done.Cusop had several good chances taking the
Ledbury defence apart twice in five minutes with shots
across the excellent Jason Walker’s goal just going
wide on each occasion. Swifts went into the lead after 30
minutes when Ben Dudley’s fine corner landed nicely
on front of Alex Morgan whose low shot went through the
packed defence and beyond the reach of the Cusop keeper.
The visitors kept their heads up and would almost certainly
have equalised but for Walker’s fine dive at the
attacker’s feet. A few seconds before half time
Swifts luck ran out when an excellent long-range beat the
home keeper following a free-kick. In the second half Cusop
were making their presence felt in the Swifts half with
Ally Mitchell and Aaron Hall working hard at cutting out
high balls while Neely Florence and Ashley Wadley who had
replaced the injured Tom Green were under pressure on the
flanks. In midfield Ford gave his all as usual and with the
help of Andy Matthews, Dudley and Richard Watkins tried to
feed Harry Gregory and Morgan up front. Later in the second
half, Ben Adams came on for the tiring Watkins. Other
changes would surely have been made but, due to an injury
sustained just prior to the match, Harry Aston-Morgan was
unable for play today. Despite their best efforts Swifts
were unable to dominate this game and were unable to create
any flowing play. Almost inevitably, Cusop took the lead
and both points with an excellently taken last minute
free-kick which was unstoppable. A downcast Swifts side
were left to reflect on a disappointing result which
brought to an end an unbeaten league run extending back to
the season before last.
Sun Sep 25 - League Match 2
Ledbury Swifts - 4 (Gregory 2, Watkins,
Morgan)
Monmouth Lads Club - 1
Within
90 seconds, Harry Gregory’s name went onto the
Swifts' score sheet for the first time when he converted a
pass from Ashley Wadley who had carried the ball down the
right wing before setting up his team-mate. Swifts kept up
the pressure for the rest of the first half with defenders
Ally Mitchell (today’s captain), Aaron Hall, Tom
Green and Neely Florence providing good protection for
keeper Justin Walker who pulled off an easy save in the
12th minute. At the other end of the field,
Gregory came close again with a shot which went over both
the visiting keeper’s head and the goalmouth and
minutes later he almost got his second but his shot went
narrowly past the right-hand post. Just before half time
Walker’s long kick fell to Alex Morgan whose shot was
easily saved. Seconds later Gregory was unlucky again
following an unselfish pass from Morgan. The second half
started with Richard Watkins in place of Wadley and it was
only 30 seconds before he put the team two up with a
cracking long-range shot. Monmouth were down but not out
and would almost certainly have scored had the on- form
Justin Walker not made a courageous dive at the visiting
forward’s feet. Ben Dudley, Andy Matthews, Watkins
and Ollie Ford battled hard in midfield and it was not long
before they supplied a ball to the tightly marked Morgan
who managed to snap a shot straight into the keeper’s
arms just before his markers could close him down. A
Watkins’ shot was scrambled clear of the line robbing
him of a second goal just before Gregory got his second
after some good play by Morgan with 10 minutes to go.
Swifts’ 3-0 lead lasted for less than a minute as
Morgan’s persistence paid off when he beat a couple
of defenders and then slotted a low shot past the keeper to
put the game beyond Monmouth’s reach. After solid
performances for much of the match, Ben Dudley and Gregory
were rested, their places being taken by Ben Adams and
Harry Aston-Monger. The last kick of the match saw the
visitors get a well-deserved consolation goal following a
free-kick which pierced the home defence and allowed the
Monmouth forward to beat the home keeper for the first time
this season. Swifts defenders were understandably
disappointed to concede a goal at this late stage but
should be encouraged by an otherwise solid performance.
Sun
Sep 18 - League Match 1
Leominster Minors - 0
Ledbury Swifts - 5 (Morgan 2, Florence, Ford,
Wadley)
Swifts’
first match of the season saw them travel to Leominster
Minors keen to start the defence of their championship with
an away win.For the first 10 minutes, they mounted a
succession of raids on the Leominster goal before the home
team gradually got back into the match making Swifts
defenders Neely Florence, Aaron Hall, Ally Mitchell and Tom
Green work to maintain their unbeaten league record which
stretches back to the season before last. However, the home
team’s sometimes frantic defending was not going to
keep Swifts from scoring for long and Ollie Ford opened
their account with a fine goal after a pass from Harry
Gregory who was making his Swifts’ debut. Within the
space of a few minutes Ford, Andy Matthews and Alex Morgan
were very unlucky not to add to the score line. With
perseverance typical of his performance Morgan took
advantage of the goalmouth confusion created by another
Swifts’ attack to crash the ball into the roof of the
net on the 21st minute to put Swifts two up. Moments later
Swifts were three up when Morgan pounced on a through ball
and coolly netted the rebound after the keeper somehow
managed to stop his first shot. Richard Watkins, Ben
Dudley, Matthews and Ford fought hard for every ball in
midfield and Gregory was unlucky when he latched on to a
through ball from Mitchell but could not find a way past
the throng of defenders who had surrounded him. Dudley was
also very unlucky when his long-range strike went narrowly
past the post and Gregory worried the life out of his
opponents by refusing to give up regardless of his
opponents’ size. In the second half Watkins, Ford and
Gregory were replaced by Ben Adams, Ashley Wadley and Harry
Aston-Monger and Swifts continued to push for more goals.
Not long after the re-start, Neely Florence latched onto a
loose ball just inside the Leominster half and launched a
massive kick which sailed over the helpless keeper’s
head to make it 0-4. A superb Wadley half-volley made it
0-5 soon afterwards and Morgan came close to his first
hat-trick of the season after a fine individual effort when
his volley was turned over the bar. The result may look
one-sided, but credit to Leominster for the attacking
football they played at every chance; without an
outstanding performance from new keeper Jason Walker, who
not only made several outstanding saves, but also showed he
is a fine judge of when to come off his line to clear the
ball, the result would have been much closer. Every Swifts
player should be pleased with today’s performance
– hopefully they can continue in the same vein for
the rest of the season.
